A claw hammer is a hand tool that is primarily used in carpentry to drive nails into or out of wood. This hammer consists of a metal head and handle, which historically was made of wood, but can also be made of steel, fiberglass or other composite materials. One side of the head has a smooth or textured back of the head and is used for driving, while the other is a pair of bent-down V-shaped claws and is used for prying – most often for extracting nails from wood.

Hammers come in a variety of designs, but they usually come in two types. The most popular type of hammer is the two-piece hammer. This hammer is produced of a forged steel head with a hole to attach the wooden handle. Other handle materials can be fiberglass and even carbon fiber.

Another type of claw hammer is a solid forged heat-treated steel in which the head and handle form a single piece. These hammers often have polymer handles to improve ergonomics and reduce vibration when using the hammer. The process of making a metal hammer handle is very similar to creating a hammer head from steel rods heated to extreme temperatures and molten steel pressed into molds. Other materials can be added to the center of hammers to give greater strength and durability.

When we say a hammer, we all know what to expect them to be used for. In its simplest form, a hammer can be described as a hand tool that is simply used to strike another object. Did you know that the first hammers date back to 2,400,000 BC. Later, the stones were used as hammerheads attached to sticks with strips of leather and animal tendons. However, it was not until the Bronze Age that we saw the creation of the hammer styles we see today.
